Easy FX question

question, exchange, expected
“The USD:JPY exchange rate is expected to decline from 77.68 to 77.50, which means the USD is expected to depreciate against the JPY.”
If, in a year from now, it costs less USD to buy one JPY, wouldn’t the USD appreciate against the JPY?

you are getting fewer JPY for 1 USD. So JPY appreciated, USD depreciated.

So I misunderstood the FX convention then?
USD:JPY = JPY/USD
