Can someone provide an example of how classification of recurring revenue as nonrecurring revenue will understate current operating earnings?

Non-recurring items (i.e. discontinued operations) are reported as a separate line item on the income statement, after income from continuing operations, net of tax. so if recurring are classified as nonrecurring one is "deflating" operating earnings...?
