The Examiner for paper 3.5 is Geoff Gravil, who was the Examiner for Paper 12 under the old syllabus. His questions require a practical approach, in which theory is used to support analysis and proposals rather than a substitute for them. The ACCA website has an interesting statement prepared by the Examiner called “Examiner’s Approach”. In this, the Examiner makes several interesting points.
1) He seems to say that he is more likely to examine the practical aspects of marketing than such aspects of HRM and IT as the latter are more fully covered in other exams.
2)The major case study will always include quantitative data. Candidates must analyze and use this but not to the exclusion of interpretation and the use of the written data given.
3)It is important that candidates use the case scenarios to base their answer on.
“Some candidate may choose to use a SWOT analysis of 6 M model and some may apply the value chain, demonstrating the company has not successfully integrated all activities clearly. Some candidate may even focus on the need to market more comprehensively using marketing mix model to show the need for more cost-effective distribution channels and the development of a more powerful brand name. Even lifecycle analysis could be employed, demonstrating the urgent need for new product development. The answer could contain all these models (and even more) and marks will be awarded where appropriate. There is no one precise and correct methodology in answering this section.”
