Hi guys,

So i studied for the Level 1 exam June 2011 and failed. The problem is not that I failed or passed but because I scored Band 4 which made me very very crazy. The problem here is that in June 09 I entered this exam with not even 10% of the effort I did this year and i scored band 2.
This year I was easily scoring above 70 % in both mock and schweser exams , so what on earth did i do wrong and what exactly happened to me during the exam?

I work in the banking industry, have about 2.5 years of experience and have a very good academic transcript .I never failed before neither in high school nor in college so this a bit awkward to me...

The thing is I'm planning to go for December as im really not counting my 1st try in 09 and Im "brave enough" to spend the same time again studying but my only problem is "How will I learn and what did I do wrong and not doing it again ? "

Any input is appreciated

Thanks

You say your second attempt was 10X more effort than your first. But keep in mind the scores are on a comparative basis, it's you against everyone else that determines your band.

It's also very easy to fall for the distractor answers on the exam. The answers on the actual exam are very well thought out and it is very easy to get a wrong answer if you do one little thing wrong.

Just keep plugging away. Maybe focus less on doing marathon (3-6 hours) mock exams and do shorter, more focused "custom tests" from question banks to really go deep in each topical area.

I found this to be more helpful, personally, at levels 1 and 2. Level 3 was a different story...

Do as many problems from as many providers as you can. Q-bank and elan's 2000 question bank are the best. Seeing as many questions as possible thrown at you from every angle is the key to L1.

Sorry to hear your situation. I took the exam the first time and have posted some tips in the thread 'Results june 2011' should you be interested. My comments are on page 4 towards the end, and very different from what most people will recommend you to do.

Best of luck.

The problem is that L2 is more difficult than L1 in every way. And L3 is more difficult to pass than L2.

So if it takes you 3 attempts to pass L1, it's likely to take you at least 3 attempts to pass L2, and at least 3 attempts to pass L3.

You need to ask yourself whether you're willing to spend the next 7+ years fighting your way through this program.

well... i wouldnt agree with wendy..passing or failing completely depends on ones preparation(there could be many reasons for the lack of preparation eg..personal,work related etc). I have my friend who passed level 1 in 3rd attempt, level 2 in 1st and level 3 on 2nd attempt.. Only 39% passed this exam.. bro..my advice is that if u try and understand the material really well, u can pass it.. So all i can tell u is ,dont byheart anything and try to understand and master the concept. Also try practicing all the EOC questions. I m pretty sure u can clear it. God Bless!!!

I'm a science major phd and will start to do equity research later this year. Basically I don't have much background in finance/accounting. I didn't have time to read the official text books from CFA. So I bought schweser notes in February as my friends told me to. I finished reading 5 books in 2 months, read them again in another half month, and spent the whole last month doing schweser mock exams, CFA exams and other previous CFA mock exams as long as I could find them on google. I took notes all the time, and review my notes many time in the final week. I score 100-110 out of 120 problems in the latest CFA mock exams and >70% in all subjects in real exam.
