1st post, for what it's worth. This site is like a car wreck. I'm annoyed by so many posters but I have to keep looking.
My keys to passing:
1.) Learn to hate AIMR. Remember they are they enemy. Don't let them beat you. Get mad. Let it motivate you. I failed Level I twice, took off a few years and then passed 3 consecutive years.
2.) Spouse or significant other has to buy into it - My wife was a single Mom from Jan to May these past 3 years with 3 kids. She understood how imporant it was for my job. I was lucky. In fact, she would be on me to study.
3.) I used Schweser notes, Schweser test bank and Schweser CDs in the car and borrowed 2002 Schweser videos for Level III. Do as many questions as you can toward the end. Started studying in January. I bought the texts and didn't open them as I had all I could do to cover the notes. I would study at lunch (my firm was very supportive) and 2 hours at night. On weekend 5 hours a day moving to 8 hours a day in last 6 weeks.
4.) Score over 70% on ethics. I had 13 sections at 50% or below, 2 sections 50%-70% and 4 sections above 70%. I actually can't figure out how I passed.
5.) Take off last week before test and immerse yourself. Avoid anything that distracts you. It took over my life.
6.) Have your mother-in-law say rosaries and novenas. You may laugh but I'm not discounting anything.
7.) Take test at a smaller test center. I took test in RI and virtually everyone in my test room was from Massachusetts. Less distracting and less stressful environment.
8.) Don't get burned out early, keep on a schedule but don't over do it. I needed it for the final big push.
Not to pontificate but don't give up. I was a finance major with a B- average at a Big East school so you can do it. Luck plays a part. The test throws you some questions which are your strengths and skips some areas where you're weak. Get mad.

man do I feel like ****. This was my second shot at Level 3 and I FAILED again. Last year, I used the low pass rate as an excuse, can't do that this year. I actually thought that I passed this year, but WOW did I BOMB the morning section. Did alright in the afternoon yet, I INEXPLICABLY failed Ethics, come on, how did I fail ethics and get above 70 on Fixed Income a section I know nothing about. I got a 52 on the 40/60/80 game although I really don't know how good a barometer that is. I really don't study nearly enough as I should for this, so really I have no one to blame but myself, but its really hard to imagine that I am going to have to go through the same process again this year, it just hangs over your head all the time. I definitely have to change my plan of attack for next year but this just couldn't suck anymore.

I BARELY passed....55% on 40/60/80.
I did well in all sections, but failed ALL PM sections.
I thought I was well prepared for PM.....having wrote a list of every single possible constraint/horizon/tax answer. I thought memorizing this list and then cut and paste on the exam would work....BIG mistake.
Even though there have been hundreds of practice PM questions, AIMR manages to find a way so that you cannot cut and paste answers from previous PM questions. This years PM question gave me a curve ball, especially that part with the young kid dieing before the old lady, etc. This confused me and prevented me from applying past answers to the question.
I don't know if there is a technique for PM questions since memorization will only get you that far.
Luckily I passed, but if I didn't, my strategy would be to spend less time studying PM and more time on the Ethics, Quant, Hedge funds, RE, etc.
I spent waaaaay more time on PM this year, and couldn't even get one PM section over 50...its way to subjective.
The ONLY reason I passed this year was because I got 50-70 in all other non-PM sections, and I spent 1/5 the time combined on all those other sections compared to PM.

" I also used the audio's CD’s at night while reading the notes (It help to keep my mind focused on the material). ......"
That's a good idea Alec.
"....about the SSFA. It’s a 1 week program with over 50 hrs at the University of Windsor . The food and accommodation were terrible but the program was excellent. Doubtful I would have passed if I hadn’t attended......"
I thought the food was good, but the accommodations & program terrible. It was just too hard to hear and see the instructors and the dorm room was a joke. But there is a lot to be said for having 1 full week with nothing to do but study. I skiped 1/2 the classes and studied on my own instead.
I thought the Schweser notes were excellent (memorize The Secret Sauce). By the way the Allen notes were terrible. I switched to Schweser in early April and that saved my ass..
Passed L1 & L2 first sitting and I might consider the SSFA next year for L3 if Schweser can convince me they will improve the Audio/Visual.

My advice is to use the textbooks and do the questions at the end of the relevant chapters. The Fabozzi and Quant books have excellent questions which are stylistically similar to what could appear on the Level III Exam. Good luck.

I think it's hard to do well on the morning section, at least on the more subjective questions, so one should really try to nail down the afternoon section.
Studying the end of chapter questions from the textbooks, and going over the past AIMR exam questions are key, as well as doing as many mock exams as possible.
Not a great fan of reading the texts, especially if you are time constrained.

Oh man,
If I had passed ethics I likely would have passed the exam, this is unbelievable.

Chi-Town,
Hang tough buddy. I'm about to become a lowly Level II candidate, so I can only imagine how much work you've already put into this program. That said, all that work WILL NOT go unrewarded. You can and will pass Level III and your victory will be all the more sweeter having faced down the challenges and disappointments along the way.
For what it's worth and I'm sure you've heard this, but it's true,
"that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger"
While the CFA program comes close to killing us, it definitely makes us stronger.

To all who failed Level 3...
I truly feel your pain - having finally passed on the third attempt, I can honestly say level 3 is the most grueling of the three exams. The funny thing is that I failed all the policy questions yet I write policy statements for individual clients frequently - whats up with that? The test is bullpucky and AIMR knows it.
As for suggestions, here is my two cents in order of priority:
1. KNOW ethics cold. Read the handbook and casebook - all topical readings as well. On test day always go with the most conservative answer (i.e. full disclosure). I was borderline with 54.7% - ethics was the only >70% in the afternoon - might have been the difference.
2. Rely on Schweser for complex material - derivatives, fixed income, etc. Attempt to read the candidate readings - I actually caught a break re-reading Alternatives-hedgefunds the night before- LUCKY
3. Don't try and learn everything. I saved time by ignoring derivates and parts of quant. Hammer the things you know.
4. Make your own notes - this is critical. I found just writing my notes helped my retention. Surprisingly, my recall was pretty good (for a change). In the past, I had relied on Schwesers flashcards.
5. Finally, it doesn't matter if you get 90% or 54.7% - just pass baby.
Good luck next year - Get back in the PIT - took me 8 long years to pass all three exams. Life gets in the way, but plug on people.

I would like to offer one additional piece of advice that worked well for me this year:
Wear ear-plugs!
For the first time this year I wore ear-plugs to the exam and was surprised at how much little distracting noise it blocks allowing you to focus more on the exam.

Things to do that most people don't do but should:
1. Work the assigned problems from the AIMR texts (quant, PM, fixed income, derivatives). I cannot emphasize this enough. You will see the same types of problems on the exam, especially in the afternoon.
2. Read the AIMR texts to fill in areas that your study provider does not cover well. This is particularly important for new AIMR assigned readings.
3. Read the original AIMR assigned readings for ethics. This year's level 3 exam covered some material that wasn't even mentioned by Schweser.

Passed L3 this year but had to take two swings at L2.
I agree with Truth Teller. Go with the quant and fixed income books minimum. Especially the end-of-chapter problems. I kept doing problems rather than going through the chapter again. If you can do the problems in the books you are ready to deal with AIMR.
If I had to write L2 or L3 I would use the AIMR texts as my main study aid and Schweser notes only for revision in the weeks before the exam.
What I also did was start the session by going directly the subjects that I really knew well and finished them quickly. It is a well known secret that a lot of timed pressure tests start with the most difficult questions first and that does not leave you any time for the easy and juicy ones later.
I also have to confess that my handwriting was terrible and am really thankful that they actually slogged through it.

Thank you guys, for your kind advices.
I see what was wrong with my study method. I only read study notes (prepared by a lousy brand, by the way) and did past level 3 exam (official) questions. Felt that I was ready for the exam, but that was an illusion.
Too bad that I failed. My boyfriend was about to propose and I will only need one more year to finish my PhD. Then blah blah blah, with a happy ending. Now my schedule gets a little messier, but hopefully I will do much better next year.

Have anyone using JKE/Excel Exam Review Notes and flash cards and passed L3? Are they good?

Chitown,
Keep it at; I passed with just a 60. You really should practice those topics Schweser suggests and the rest of the material as best you can; also, buy Schweser's Secret Sauce and study old PM questions. Best wishes.

The key to passing for me, like most people, was a strong afternoon session. I felt the time factor in the morning made it next to impossible to do really well in that session. I also did well in ethics, which may have been the deciding factor in my case. The key this year was to pick up enough part marks in the morning to keep you in the ball game, try not to get discouraged, then bring it home in the afternoon. If I had to repeat, my strategy would be simple: practice exams, practice exams and more practice exams. Under timed conditions. Until you're getting 80s and it feels like you could write one of these things in your sleep. That worked for me when I had to repeat level 2.
Chi-Town, sorry to hear you didn't get it. I always learned something from reading your posts and felt that you had a deep understanding of the material. Hope it's third time lucky for you...best wishes.

Preacherman, Chi-town, betsy, et. al: I thought I had this one nailed after going 2 for 2 on the first 2 levels! I had only a 51% on the 40/60/80 scale, and got <70% on ethics for the first time. On the first 2 levels, it looks like I bombed the entire exam except ethics. But according to the guy who aced the morning and <50% on all PM sections, I guess ethics is no "tie-breaker". I still have no idea what went wrong, except that now the first 5 months of 2004 will be wrong again. My wife is going to kill me! I switched from Schweser to Stalla and felt much better walking out of the exam center. I also used Excel practice exams, which were tough but had horrible answer keys.
I am buying the Quant. and Fabozzi texts and other candidate readings as suggested for next years studies. Is the PassPro CD-rom good? Pls advise.

Stuffed up L3 last year. Got through this year luckily.
What I did different this year was I did not "study" at all. Rather I just got my hands on heaps of questions and started practicing questions from Day 1. Then when i got stuck ( totally forgot the stuff), went back to the books and just drilled into the topics until I could do the questions without thinking.......
I also switched from Scheweser to Stalla, which I found more useful because Stalla's questions were harder and kept me reading the note or learn by osmosis.....
All the best.

Thanks to everyone for the insightful advice.
I think the concensus is to do lots of practice problems and Pass Pro and Excel Tests (now a part of Schweser) seems to have the best problems.
Does anyone know if the Schweser questions in the Schweser Pro online are the same questions that are at the end of the section of the notes. If they are the same questions, than it is some what of a rip off to purchase the questions that you would already have in the notes in another format for more money. Schweser likes to do that and they say that they are selling it in a different way because people learn differently and may prefer one media to another.
I've seen Stalla and I wasn't crazy about them.
I never heard anybody review Modlin or BISYS.
I saw a sample of Figov's notes on the website and they looked concise. The problem is that its hard to judge someone's notes looking at the ethic section. I would rather see a sample of Derivates, PM or FI. |
