GMAT

Hi,
just wondering if any of you guys ever attempted the GMAT? If yes, did you do well?

it easier when you are fresh out of school too; it was difficult for me as I graduated from Undergrad in 2001.

It felt like I was cleaning out cobwebs to recall some of those formulas lol.

Took it, got a 730, it's a joke, L1 raped me and fully expecting my fail in a month.

I took my GMAT in Dec, scored a 720.

VERY different than the CFA L1. I would say the trick to the GMAT, due to the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) format, is to focus on questions in the range you are falling in. Focusing on easy questions if you are consistently in the 700 range is a waste of your time; you will only get a handful of questions and will be moved into the tougher brackets quickly.

I liked the Princeton Review and Veritas. If you are scoring over 700 on the free practice exams and Princeton Review, go ahead and use Veritas. If you are consistently scoring below a 650, I would not use Veritas as it is geared towards the difficult side.

I was accepted into NYU Stern (I'm doing the part time program as my employer is paying for it) for this fall. I am particularly pleased with that as it is convenient for me and I like the school.

GMAT 800 (I think it's called that) was great for the tougher problems. In the end things just started clicking. You really need to understand how to handle all the types of questions. Sentence correction on the actual test is tough if you're not a pro because they just mash together all the different kinds of errors in a sentence.

For math my only suggestion is to not make stupid errors. The test is definitely a marathon, and they throw in plenty of chances for you to make little mistakes. So just slow down and think things through.

Sample tests are okay, but I think they're better for pacing and just getting used to it. Focus on problem sets to get better at the material rather than doing whole tests. You'll get very worn out. This is probably a change from you're CFA strategy; doing whole tests was pretty key there, as I'm sure you know. Congrats on taking the test in June, good luck with the results.

What are your tools for success on the GMAT? I just took L1 and studying for GMAT as I await my results. I'm currently working off the Official GMAT Guide book that GMAC publishes. Do you recommend any other books to score in the 700 range? Thanks,

I took it twice and got a 710 the final time.

eastwoodsd28, are you in the ASAP program at the UW?

I took it my 4th year of undergrad and achieved a whopping 550.
A few years later I decided to actually give a crap about the test and got a 690 which, being good enough for UW Madison, was good enough for me.
