How to move out of operations in buy side?

I passed level I. Do I have to pass level II to get a real analyst job? I have seen people who are already charter holders still going operation job though.

Or is "someone who you know" more helpful in this industry?

You could try to get over to the buy-side in an operations/accounting role.

Then you get your charter and you pray -

Most likely, it will not happen.

But if you work your butt off and are intelligent and thorough, almost anything is possible. You will not get an analyst role just by having a CFA with no experience.

Take some formal modeling classes (not the runway kind) and maybe a possibility of becoming a junior analyst will open up.

Still, I believe the chances to be extremely slim - and you can take it from me because i'm trying to somehow miraculously do the same thing

i took a research internship while studying for level 1 in hopes of showing potential employers my commitment. i have had some positive feedback but once in operations you always get pegged for operations. harsh reality of life
things i'm doing to break out of operations:
1)making sure i pass level 2 the first time around. seeeeee ya social life for the next 8 months.
2) started doing my own research/analyst work and submitting it with my resume to employers, building up my portfolio of ideas and claims
3)networking like crazy and meeting anyone and everyone for "a cup of coffee" (f**ckin hate this but its a means to an end)
4) praying to god all this work leads to something
