Asset Management to M&A work

Hi everyone, wanted some input on this question. Currently i work in a small asset management/financial planning company. I really enjoy the portfolio management side of the work. Some day i would love to wrok for a hedge or mutual fund.

Anyways, what do you all think about changing gears and doing some M&A type work for a few years (if the opportunity was available). Part of me is very intrigued by the different experience, but I also worry that leaving this side of the business will make it much harder to get into in the future if i wanted to.

Any thoughts?

M&A work experience is a definitely plus, only switch if you can get into a reputable firm and by M&A work I assume you are refering to valuation of companies for buyouts etc.

These are transferable to asset management companies to analyst and then PM roles.
