if a person retires and live on the pension income, is the income taxable?


if a person retires and live on the annuity, is the annuity taxable?


if a person retires and live on his/her own portfolio to generate income, is income taxable?

Hard to generalize, it really depends on the jurisdiction. From the cases I've seen, all retirement income is taxable or has been expressed as after tax.

Yes.

if a person retires and live on the annuity, is the annuity taxable?


Only the part that is considered to be interest. They receive their principal back tax free. So you invest 100k in an annuity, the insurance company says of your monthly payments $100 is considered interest and the remainder a return of principal so it is not all taxed. But I wouldnt worry about this, CFAI has not discussed nor tested this concept so I would forget about it.

yes. as long as it isnt tax exempt securities like munies.
