Does anyone have a pretty simple method of understanding when to do what with the formulas?

Aka when do you use the future value formula, when do you use the present value formula, what do you consider the dividend yield of the index etc...

So far I have been memorizing, but haven't sat down to really understand why and feel like a robot with the calculations.
