Hi guys,

I'm just about to enter my final year at University and I'm thinking about sitting Level 1 CFA in December. I'm a Business major and I haven't done much Accounting (just did a basic Accounting class in my first year).

Do you guys think it's a reasonable target to sign up for the December exam and do I stand a good chance of passing?

Are you taking a full course load? If so, I probably would wait until graduation then sign up

Depends upon your load. If you can manage to study roughly 250 to 300 quality hours before the exam then you can opt for it else appear the next year. But if you are good in managing load and have the tendency to read and retain well then go for Level 1 in December and appear in Level 2 in June 2012. But for that your dedication, devotion and courage is required. I've seen innumerable cases in my area who along with their graduation (in the final semester) have managed to appear in Level 1 in December and in Level 2 in June and they've passed. It's not entirely based upon luck but excessively on your hard work which is separating quality time for reading and retaining the concepts.

Hi guys,

Thank you for your posts. I will be doing pretty straight forward courses, bar of course my Corporate Finance module. I was thinking of giving the CFA about 5-10 hours a week revision. Is that manageable until December?

I don't think 10 hrs per week will be sufficient, especially if you don't have a very good ground in the material already. 10 hrs per week is only about 160 hours between now and the exam.

I concur. You better study your ass off— questions and supplemental readings to your knowledge— because I just signed up for around $1,100 and I can't even afford it right now. Better to over-study and be confident (safe) rather than just barely fail (sorry) and waste the money.

You better study every waking hour for this exam and forget about being social if you want to write in December since you will also be doing school.

Man, I could have bought a nice desktop computer with that money

Cool guys. Appreciate the help. Any idea on what's a good weekly time period to allocate to this exam? I would rather have a goal.

I wouldn't do it unless u were thinking of doing lvl 2 in June next yr.

I would never significantly compromise my current studies to complete the cfa one yr quicker.

Ask anyone how much study and stress is involved for level 2. Yes some ppl study and knock off dec-jun combo but there are many many more who don't.

Why would I not consider it if I'm not doing Level 2 in June 2012?

The only reason to force level 1 in December is if you are planning on doing Level 2 in June... if not, you might as well do level 1 in June, and be (i would assume) more prepared.

I get it. I'm basically doing it before January so that I'm ready for recruitment season in January.

I'll have a look if I can borrow some of the books from a friend to see if it's manageable and then sign up accordingly. Thank you for the help.
