Gearing up for practice exam difference, standpoint, practice, question, another

More of a psychological question: how long should I wait and gear up before I take my first practice exam? From a mental standpoint, I feel like this could make a difference. Obviously, from a strictly scoring perspective, you're going to get what you're going to get and that depends on how much you know. Still, do others feel like they want to wait a little longer and be confident going into their first practice exam? Am I making a mistake here if I wait another couple weeks?
