Hi there, the challenge problems in Schweser really help ground the concepts that you learned as part of a reading.  I did the challenge problems and found that they helped me a lot.  In addition, make sure that you do all of the problems in the CFA books.
As far as the challenge problems being part of the exam, the exam is multiple choice as you said, so the format would be different from the quant challenge problems in the Schweser book.
