When I try to explain the hair-splitting difference between a Certification and a Charter, I like to point out that a Certification says that you've completed something, whereas a Charter is a letter giving you the right to do something. What does a Chartered Financial Analyst Charter entitle you to do? Well, mostly it entitles you to put CFA after your name on your business card, subject to your paying the fees and not doing anything naughty.
